If there were, on French soil,
cursed poets,
On the banks of the Río de la Plata
blessed ones were born.
Glory to the Holy Poets,
Forever and ever,
Tango, in its verses,
shall be the voice of the people.
The Holy Poets of Tango — a lecture inviting you to discover the lives and works of six great poetic figures of tango.
Based on the book *Santas y santos poetas del tango*, written by Luli, this lecture offers a sensitive journey through the lives and worlds of Enrique Santos Discépolo (the saintly poet of drama), María Luisa Carnelli (the first saintly poet of tango), Homero Manzi (the saint of memory), Homero Expósito (the surrealist saint of tango), Cátulo Castillo (the saintly poet of the ultimate) and Eladia Blázquez (the saintly poet of the new era).
Inspired by Paul Verlaine’s Les Poètes maudits, this event highlights the literary intersections and the significance of these authors’ poetic contributions to tango.
Their words continue to resonate in songs still danced to today, inspiring the deepest embraces, more than half a century after their creation.
A sensitive and accessible event to discover — or rediscover — the poetry of tango
