Milagros Mumenthaler, Argentina
2025 - 1h40
Milagros Mumenthaler, the director, was born in Argentina in 1977, but as her parents fled the dictatorship, she was raised in Switzerland.
These two countries feature in her third feature film, inspired by Siri Hustvedt’ s book "The Shaking Woman".
Lina, a 34-year-old Argentine, has everything she needs to be happy. She is a fashion designer at the peak of her career. Whilst travelling to Switzerland to receive a prestigious award, she throws herself into a river, without explanation. When she returns to Argentina, she does not speak of the incident. But despite her silence, a fear of water gradually takes hold of her, to the point where her daily life becomes unbearable and a past she thought she had drowned resurfaces.
A portrait of a fractured woman, yet the film breaks new ground stylistically and refuses to take the easy route of trauma.
It stands out for its enigmatic atmosphere, carried by the actress Isabel Aimé Gonzalez Sola, with her somnambulistic beauty. Indeed, no disorder is explicitly named: rather, the film exposes its protagonist’s existential vertigo through a web of family and social tensions.
Lina constantly appears out of step with the world around her, as if a stranger to her own daily life, unable to fully fulfill her new role as mother and wife.
A spellbinding film of great refinement and delicate strangeness!
